On-Location in Kansas City: Featuring Unity Village!

We have gushed about Unity Village in our Top 10 Photoshoot Locations in KC list — but it really deserves its own post.

It’s a mere 15 miles from downtown KC — and has 1,200 acres, along with “the largest fountain display in the metro, an award-winning rose garden, and two buildings that are included on the National Register of Historic Places.”

There’s also a bookstore and coffee shop on the campus. The bookstore even serves Starbucks! Tatiana and I are suckers for anything coffee, so clearly that’s a win in our book!

One of the main shining stars at Unity is that said rose garden. Of course it’s seasonal, but it sure is worth the trip when they’re in bloom. Hundreds of roses are filling the air with exotic fragrances. They have little markers on what the various breeds are — and I can guarantee you’ll find some you’ve never heard of.

The fountains are also seasonal. Unity keeps the water on as long as they can — depending on the temperature. They will turn them off before the first freeze, but they do keep an eye on the weather (they don’t just automatically turn off the water come Labor Day, like every other water functioning place on Earth … lol). Sometimes they’re on through October if the weather holds out!

The main section we usually use for photographs is the rose garden. It’s impossible to beat. Pops of color everywhere, streaming fountains, and Mediterranean architecture as a backdrop. Unity Village also allows photographers without an additional fee — which is rare for a rose garden (I’m lookin’ at you, Loose Park)!

It’s also the perfect spot for, say, a surprise proposal? 😉

However, the thing that really makes Unity Village stand out is that even if the roses aren’t in bloom, and the fountains are turned off — there is some stunning architecture. It truly is the perfect location year-round!

Arches galore, ornate doorways, stunning architecture all around. We’ve never had a problem with too many people at Unity Village (although Sundays are one of their busiest days, it still isn’t claustrophobic busy). Everyone we’ve ever encountered has been very friendly and helpful!

We should totally be sales rep for Unity Village! Haha. We are not getting paid in any way for this feature — we just genuinely love this place and want it to succeed so that we may use it as a photo location for years and years to come!

Clarissa Grad 4

We’ve done every type of photoshoot here. Engagement. Anniversary. Surprise Proposal. Graduation. We’ve also done family photos, senior photos, and cosplay shoots here. You name it!

Even if it’s about to rain — still stunning!

And this post mainly focused on the rose garden. You can venture beyond the garden and find stone buildings, gorgeous hills, and walking trails!

A “Hogwarts” Vibe & A 1-Year Anniversary — Celebrating Melissa and Richard!

From the moment Richard said “bowties are cool,” I knew this was going to be a fun photoshoot! Tatiana here!

Melissa Richard 11

When I first saw Melissa’s gorgeous red hair and Richard’s bowtie — my inner Whovian shouted “Geronimo!” It’s always fun meeting other nerds through my line of work as a photographer.

This couple wanted to capture their one year wedding anniversary, and I’m so glad they chose to contact us. They picked Unity Village because it had a “Hogwarts” vibe. I didn’t think to ask what their houses are, but I’m a Slytherin myself … don’t hate. 😉

Actually, so is Christine, but she’s a little more upset about it than I am. Which is not at all.

The hanging lanterns make for an amazing glow, and I’m a sucker for pillars.

Melissa Richard 13.jpg

… also a sucker for archways! Unity Village has a vast amount of different scenery and backgrounds to choose from. You just can’t go wrong here — and as a photographer, you can never get bored!

Melissa and Richard are my kind of people! They frequent the Kansas City Renaissance Festival and go to Planet Comicon every year. It always makes me happy to see two people come together — and they’re a perfect fit!

Melissa Richard 8.jpg

Their love is so genuine and natural, I can see it shine through in each photo — which made it so hard to pick which photos to edit for their teasers!

Melissa Richard 7

Although, I had no problem deciding to include this one. I absolutely could NOT leave these gems out. Work it, Richard!

He sure knows how to strike a pose. Melissa, aren’t you glad forever is with someone who can make you smile?

Wishing you many more!

This Dog Posed With An Engagement Ring On Its Nose! A Unity Village Engagement Shoot

We first met Tyler in January, when he called Kansas City Photography about his secret plans for a surprise proposal for his girlfriend (now fiancée), Taelor!

_DSC9021

This was his adorable spiel to me over the phone:

“I’m planning on proposing to my girlfriend, and I want a photographer to be there to capture the moment. But, I don’t want her to know you’re there for us until after I am down on one knee.”

We chatted about when and where to meet — everything was set in place. We met at Kaw Point Park … and then this happened:

Gorgeous, right?! It has one of the best views of the Kansas City skyline.

Since their surprise proposal session was a mini shoot, Tyler & Taelor decided to bank the rest of their engagement shoot time for when it was a bit warmer outside. Liiiike this Monday! And boy, it sure was a lot warmer. So hot, in fact, everyone at the shoot joked about jumping in the fountains there!

They picked Unity Village from our list of Top 10 Photo Locations in KC. It’s full of glorious roses, but has amazing architecture as well — as you can see:

This time, they even brought their doggy, Bentley! Tatiana was thrilled, dogs are pretty much her favorite thing in the world! Miss Bentley definitely isn’t well loved, poor thing!! 😉

Tyler Taelor Engagement 10

Also, we absolutely have to mention how well behaved she is. Tatiana was able to put Taelor’s engagement ring on Bentley’s nose! She didn’t even try to eat it! Although, they did walk around Unity Village a few laps beforehand to make sure she was nice and tuckered out.

Taelor met Tyler through her brother, Alex. They all went to UCM together. Props, Alex! You introduced your sister to her future husband. That must feel really awesome!

Taelor also has impeccable taste in clothing. Both dresses she wore were beautiful. One was lacey, with an open back similar to a wedding dress (how fitting since she’s going to be a bride soon!):

And the other was long and flowy — perfect to twirl in! Also, great practice for their first dance at their reception!

Tyler Taelor Engagement 7

Taelor, feel free to dress us any time — your taste is amazing! Tyler was dapper himself, don’t feel left out! That yellow was a perfect choice!
