No One Expected Them To Crash This Fairytale Wedding!

Lindsey planned a Disney fairtytale wedding, complete with a surprise no one saw coming during the reception — but we’ll get to that in a second!

First, meet our newlyweds: Lindsey & Dan!

IMG_1184

I’ve dubbed Lindsey the “most prepared bride” ever. She had lists upon lists, nothing was overlooked! She even planned to have two engagement sessions – one for the Spring (at an ice rink during the solar eclipse!) and one for the Fall!

Her wedding had the same attention to detail – right down to the cuffs on her bridesmaids’ robes!

IMG_0643

And just look at her “hidden Mickey” on her bouquet!

IMG_1034IMG_0792

Her table seating cards were Cinderella slippers, and her first dance with her father after her marriage was “Cinderella” by Steven Curtis Chapman.

And before she slipped into her stunning fairytale-worthy dress, she took some time to admire it. The entire thing was covered in lace.

So. Gorgeous.

IMG_0676

During the ceremony at Holy Infant Church, beautiful instrumental Disney ballads played. Lindsey knew it was almost time to lineup when she heard the first Disney song.

“Oh my gosh, I’m getting married!” It hit her. She was moments away from being a wife!

Before she walked down the aisle, her groom wrote her a sweet letter to read.

IMG_0805

Yes, Dan, it made her tear up! Great job!

After the ceremony, the bridesmaids and groosmen piled into the party bus that took us to our first outside photo location: Laumeier Sculpture Park!

It’s St. Louis’ 105-acre open-air museum and sculpture park. It’s complete with a giant eyeball statue … but we didn’t use that for wedding photos!

IMG_1049

This is when the fun really began. First, let’s start with Dan and his groomsmen … who decided they were so excited to celebrate his newly off-the-market status, that they threw him into the air!

IMG_1062

No, he didn’t pee himself … or so he says.

But these groomsmen weren’t done with their shenanigans. Next, they decided to hoist up our bride. Sure, this looks like a great shot:

IMG_1118

Until they dropped her.

IMG_1100IMG_1111

<insert scream emoji here>

But Lindsey was a true sport about it. And Dan was there to kiss her and make it all better! 😉

IMG_1202

And kiss her, and kiss her, and kiss her, and kiss her …

IMG_1276

I mean, I mentioned the kissing, right?! Even if it’s out of focus, they’re goin’ for it!

IMG_1060

Dan has to get in all the kisses he can. He earned them! Did you know he asked Lindsey out to be his girlfriend three different times before she agreed?!

But … he only had to ask her to marry him once. <3

IMG_1250

We went a couple other places for more wedding party photos after the park, and then drove over to Genesis for the reception.

Nobody, not even the bridesmaids and groomsmen, knew who was going to show up and crash it.

Here’s a hint: (Yes, I made this up on the fly and am totally proud of myself!)

One’s big and red

One’s blue and tall

One plays ball

The other shreds

Know who they are?!

IMG_1719IMG_1698

It’s the Cardinals mascot, Fredbird, and the Blues mascot, Louie! When they walked in after dinner — Mass. Hysteria.

They know how to get a party started!

IMG_1727IMG_1731

And no one was left out! Everyone was invited to dance with these two goofy mascots!

IMG_1694IMG_1688IMG_1711IMG_1713

Thanks, Dan & Lindsey for choosing Kansas City Photography to capture your fairytale wedding! Have an amazing honeymoon!

A Mad Hatter Tea Party!

“You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are.”

IMG_8697IMG_8893

I had the pleasure of capturing Momo Bunny Cosplay (our very own Tatiana) bring her vision of a Mad Hatter tea party to life! She had been preparing for this shoot for years. Literally.

Years.

IMG_8827

She hand-made her Mad Hatter cosplay and didn’t miss a single detail. There were dozens of teapots, cupcakes, and trinkets.

“I began collecting tea cups and tea sets from thrift stores, slowly getting all the pieces I needed right up until the very last hour before the shoot when the original chair I was going to use didn’t work out!” Tatiana told me.

IMG_8718IMG_9026

Momo’s best friend and fellow cosplayer, AshBear Cosplay, was the white rabbit.

IMG_9098IMG_8781

Momo’s beau, Marshmallow Tiger Cosplay, was the spoon-infatuated March Hare.

hare

For this spoon shot, I asked Eric (Marshmallow Tiger) to throw the spoon at me several times. At first he hesitated, but then I told him to aim for my leg. He literally hit the same spot on my leg five times! It kinda hurt … but no pain, no glorious spoon shot.

IMG_9008

My oldest daughter, Lily, was Alice. My youngest, Luna, was supposed to be the door mouse, but she decided to nap through the entire photoshoot …

IMG_8834

And it wouldn’t be a properly “mad” engagement without a cupcake fight.

IMG_9181IMG_9209

What Tatiana wasn’t expecting was for Eric to retaliate! To be fair, she even smooshed some green cupcake underneath his hair.

IMG_9203IMG_9223IMG_9227

“I knew who I was this morning, but I’ve changed a few times since then.”

This shoot was as much fun for me as it was for everyone involved! They all stayed in character so well, that any shot I took was gold … hence why this blog post was late … because I edited way too many.

IMG_8997

“I don’t understand why people say they suffer from insanity. I have never been happier.”

IMG_8821
Tatiana has wanted to do this shoot since Tim Burton’s first “Alice In Wonderland” came out.
“His artistic style is so breathtaking and Johnny Depp’s Hatter really struck a chord with me. It wasn’t until “Through the Looking Glass” came out that my genderbend Hatter was finished. I loved the bright colors and whimsical aspect to the sequels costumes even more and used that for my design.”
IMG_8766
Her big aspiration is to cosplay every character in “Wonderland,” but she said the Hatter spoke to her first because it was a challenge.
“THE HAT! It was my first attempt at hat making and I am super proud that the first pattern I drafted for it worked perfectly! Disclaimer: no mercury was used in the creation of this hat. lol”
IMG_8680IMG_9066
“I wanted it to really feel like looking at the photos you are IN Wonderland — or Underland if you want to get technical.”

Hopefully I delivered, Tatiana!
IMG_8845IMG_8704IMG_8739
And I wish you all a very, merry unbirthday!

Surprise Proposal at Loose Park!

We at Kansas City Photography LOVE surprise proposals because get beautiful candid shots of the exact moment a couple starts their journey from “you and me” to “we”.

Kyle contacted us about a week before he was planning to pop the big question, with time and location already figured out! Tatiana got to bust out her ancient ninja skills and enter stealth mode as Kyle and Emily entered the scene.

Emily Kyle 1

Although, Kyle ended up kneeling a bit far away since Emily told him she didn’t want to get in the way of Tatiana’s shot. Much to her surprise, she was the main subject!

Emily Kyle 2.jpg

And as usual, as Tatiana grew closer and closer snapping away there’s that awkward conversation of “Congratulations! I’m not creepy, I promise. I’m supposing to be here doing this!”

Emily Kyle 4

Emily seriously had ZERO idea this was happening, and Kyle’s planning skills are on POINT- that’ll come in handy for the wedding!

Emily Kyle 5.jpg

“I had one of my good friends ask us to go to brunch on Sunday morning. I had mentioned that morning that I wanted to go on a walk and run some errands later that day. While leaving brunch, I had our realtor text us about a “fake” showing she wanted us to meet her at. This was perfect as it left an awkward amount of time prior to the showing from the time we left brunch. I said, “Let’s go for a walk at loose park to kill some time before the showing.” While walking around the rose garden at loose park, I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me! Everything worked out perfectly and she was totally surprised.”

That explains why Emily was so confused asking, “wait… so there’s no house showing today?”

No, girl, but you get a ring instead!

Emily Kyle 8.jpg

And what a ring it is!

Seriously, kudos to Kyle! He got everyone in on it, including her mom who took her to get her nails done the day before. He thought of everything!

Emily Kyle 9

Kyle and Emily met in Junior High and were friends throughout high school. They attended Kansas State together when they became a couple. Five years later, they are now engaged!

Emily Kyle 10-1

Emily was so shocked she almost felt betrayed by how many people knew!

“You all are a bunch of liars!” She proclaimed through the smile that just couldn’t fade away.

Kyle even arranged for their family and closest friends to meet them after the shoot to celebrate. He was pretty certain the answer would be yes!

Emily Kyle 11

Thank you so much to Kyle and later to Emily for letting us be a part of your incredibly special memory! Your smiles are contagious and we can’t congratulate you enough!

We would love to talk wedding photos with you soon. 😉

Top 6 Reasons To Get Senior Photos

It’s that time of year! High school seniors are looking toward their futures and gearing up for graduation. If you’re a senior — you’ve probably contemplated getting senior photos taken either for the yearbook, your friends and family, or all of the above! If you’re a parent — you’re likely so proud of your senior. They are officially entering adulthood, and you kinda wanna brag to the world, right?

If you’re still on the fence, here are our top 6 reasons why Senior photos are worth the investment.

Alexis Senior (5)

1. They reflect who they are during a big change in their life

After high school graduation, everything changes. They grow and mature so fast, it’s hard to keep track. With graduation comes many life-changing decisions. Will they join the workforce right away or go to college? What will their major be? What is it they want to do with the rest of their life? They will meet new friends, new co-workers, and live on their own for the first time.

Capture who they are right now — because it’s all going to change so quickly. These are the last photos before they leave the nest and become adults. They’re on the cusp of greatness.

IMG_1190

2. They need a yearbook photo

Sure, you can use the one with the same blue background they’ve had for the last 12 years from the same photo people the school has used for the last 50.

But those photos certainly don’t capture personality. And they certainly don’t show off who they are, or their interests. This is a chance to stand out, and be remembered.

IMG_1061

3. They make great gifts

Tell the world! You’ve likely got your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends … send the photos to your great-aunt twice removed! You can make prints, or you can put the photos on keychains, canvases, etc.!

Plus, the more people you tell … the more likely your senior will get a congratulatory gift, right? 😉

Maxie 1

4. They can serve as professional headshots as they enter the workforce

This is actually important! As soon as I started college, I applied at a local television station (my degree is in Broadcast Journalism). I had the immediate need for a headshot!

This goes for many other professions. Headshots are that little extra to attach to a resume to make them stand out from the crowd.

IMG_3805IMG_3773

5. Great to use for Senior party invitations!

Everyone loves a good party, right? If you are hosting a celebration for your senior, even in this digital day and age, people still tend to send actual invites by mail. You can have your seniors picture printed onto the invite, or just put one of the photos in there with the invite! Maybe they haven’t had time to visit lately and will be shocked to see how much they’ve grown up!

IMG_0021

6. As a reward / present for graduating!

Senior photos can be used for all of the things above, plus as a gift from you for your senior! Something that celebrates them and this exciting and ever-changing time in their life!

Rolling Around at Briarcliff: Ashley and Skyelar’s 1-Year Engagement Shoot!

Hey there, bloggy world! Tatiana here again to take you on another photoshoot adventure!

Ashley Skyelar Engagement 4

One year ago, our now retired photographer Dawn captured Ashley and Skyelar’s “Save the Date” photos which was the first photoshoot I ever attended as a photographer with Kansas City Photography!

Ashley and Skyler engagement 009

Ashley and Skyelar are KC Photo for-lifers! With me as her best friend and Maid of Honor, and Christine as her wedding photographer, we’ve pretty much planned the next three April’s worth of shoots for them!

For this shoot, Ashley chose The Village at Briarcliff, which is a location I’ve been dying to shoot at again! It has a sweet lake with iconic Kansas City fountains, a waterfall pathway, and a beautiful cityscape up the biggest hill EVER.

Ashley Skyelar 1-1

Skyelar claims to hate photos but his big smile and even bigger personality suggest otherwise. 😉

Now, we thought Skyelar was the rascal of the day, but my chronological camera reel exposes Ashley as the first licker in question.

Ashley Skyelar 2.jpg

Sorry, girl. Gotta call you out!

But seriously, if we’re keeping score, Skyelar definitely wins for most “charismatic” fiance of the year.

Ashley Skyelar 5

Aw, how sweet! A kiss on the hold from her gallant prince.

Ashley Skyelar 6

Oh wait, no. It’s just the Knight of Slobber. HE LOOKS SO PROUD!

Ashley Skyelar 7.jpg

They both definitely have the signature husband/wife “I’m gonna do the thing/ Don’t do the thing” look down. Ashley already knew he was up to no good… again.

Ashley Skyelar 8.jpg

Now, he probably thinks these antics will get him out of more photoshoots — but it only makes us want MORE! This reminds us of “Superstar.” Seen it? The tree scene? Go watch!

Ashley Skyelar 11.jpg

Since their last shoot was more on the fancy dress side, they wanted to do a more casual look to showcase their nerdy side. Their wedding is Sci Fi/ Galaxy themed so the “Doctor Who/ Star Wars” combo suits them perfectly!

Ashley Skyelar 14

Seeing them together always tugs on my heartstrings because I have never seen Ashley so alive and glowing as I see with her and Skyelar. Without getting into a whole mushy speech (gotta save it for the wedding!), I’m just so grateful that she has found a man who treats her like the princess she is!

Now, although Skyelar had us rolling with laughter the whole shoot, Ashley took the prize at the end for most memorable moment.

In order to get our cityscape shots of downtown KC, we had to hike up this huge hill with a sharp incline. As the shoot came to a close and we had to safely get down the hill, I just hear Ashley proclaim:

“F$%# it!”

Ashley Skyelar 15

AND DOWN SHE GOES!

Ashley Skyelar 16

LITERALLY ROLLING DOWN THE HILL!

Ashley Skyelar 17.jpg

She is truly a Princess Bride!

Ashley Skyelar 19

And Skyelar’s eyes say it all every time — he knows he’s the luckiest man in the world. <3

Ashley Skyelar 18

You’ll see these two again next April on the big day! I CAN’T WAIT!

Our Top 3 Tips For A Successful Newborn Photoshoot

Everyone loves babies! Seriously. Who doesn’t? But these newborn wiggle worms don’t make it easy to get cute, snuggly photos of them! Here are our top 3 tips for a successful newborn photoshoot!

1. Make sure the house is WARM.

We usually recommend turning the heat on and having the house set around 78. No matter the season! If the adults aren’t sweating a little, it isn’t warm enough! Keep in mind, these new little snuggle bugs get cold easily. And if they’re cold, they’re going to cry. It needs to be comfortable enough in the house that the baby can have no clothes on and feel warm.

Elena (12).jpg

Elena (16).jpg

2. Feed Baby 30 Min. Before The Shoot

A hungry baby is a crabby baby. And we want your little nugget of love to be happy and smiling during the photoshoot! Feeding your snuggle bug 30 minutes before the shoot ensure they won’t be hungry come closeup time! It also gives some time for any stomach rumblies or spit up to happen. Now, not that we still won’t get pooped on from time to time … but at least the babies are happy!

Jax (2).jpg

3. Schedule Within The First Two Weeks

Babies grow — FAST!! We’ve found they really retain that new “baby” look within the first two weeks after birth. After that, they really start changing into their own little person very rapidly. The “baby” cheeks go away so quickly, it’s actually kind of heartbreaking! If you want true “newborn” photos, we need to take them when they actually are newly born!

We hope these helpful tips will make your newborn photoshoot a success!

OH, BOY! A Surprise Gender Reveal!

Yesterday, I went over to Jenn and James’ house for a very important photoshoot — a gender reveal of their second baby! Big sister Genevieve is pretty stoked about it, let me tell ya:

Adams Reveal (3)

Jenn got the secret envelope that said the gender early last week. Somehow, she refrained from looking, and made sure to hide it so her husband wouldn’t peek (he told her he would if he found it).

We called in our friend Alyssa, who is the Queen of Props. She delivered! She brought chalkboards, letter boards, and the item that made the shoot: the confetti cannon!

Adams Reveal (1)

Jenn had been prepping her husband the entire week that he wasn’t allowed to make a weird face when it was a girl. Everyone was expecting them to have another girl, which is why we got these priceless faces when blue shot out of the cannon!

IMG_7029Adams Reveal (2)

I seriously don’t think I have ever seen Jenn make that face. She is notoriously bad with surprises, but the look of pure shock on her face is priceless! James thought we for sure accidentally fired the wrong cannon. He kept asking: “Are you serious? Are you serious?”

No mistakes here! It was all boy! We also tried to do another fun reveal photo that involved Genevieve dipping her hands in blue ink. You can see how well that went:

IMG_7056

It must have been really hard for Jenn to wait, too, because they had the envelope for nearly a week before I was able to make it over there for the shoot. I am proud of their patience! And, capturing this moment was definitely well worth the wait!

We all know Genevieve is going to be the best big sister!

IMG_7079

Jenn is due at the end of August! I am not allowed to reveal the name just yet, but it’s adorable. I can’t wait to take photos of Genevieve and her new baby brother!

IMG_7081

We’d love to capture your special moment, too! Message us to set up your gender reveal (and don’t forget we are in KC and St. Louis)!

4 Things All Bridesmaids Wish They Would Have Known

You’ve been asked to be in a wedding — what an incredible honor! Of course, your gut reaction is a squealing “YES!,” but now that you’re in, here are some things you’re really gonna need to know.

collageresize4print.jpg

1. Finances. You are gonna need to budget, stat!

The bridesmaid gown or tux rental, the bachelorette/bachelor party (and if they decide on a party bus or not …), the wedding shower, the wedding itself with all of the various travel / hotel expenses, and then hair and makeup on the big day.

It’s good to mentally prepare, and also budget for this big (yet oh-so-worth-it! commitment). Make sure to communicate with the entire wedding party and set a budget that works for everyone.

Wedding Party 10.jpg

We reached out to one of the bridesmaids in a wedding we recently had the honor to shoot. Here’s what she had to say:

“As a bridesmaid, it’s important to know and expect the financial responsibilities … once you’re involved, if you can’t afford things, it makes it stressful for the rest of the group and isn’t fair to the bride.”

2. You’re going to wear a LOT of different hats

It takes a lot more than just “showing up” to be in the wedding party. You’re going to be in a major support role, too. You’re going to be a therapist, the snack fetcher, the pillar for the bride to stand on when she’s so stressed she can’t stand it (especially if you’re in the Maid/Matron of Honor or Best Man role!).

Heriford (20)

I’m going to tell you a story from a wedding of a best friend of mine.

Her husband couldn’t find his tux on their wedding day.

I saw a panicked look on his face (seriously, and hour to go until it was ‘walk down the aisle’ time). I asked him what was wrong.

“Christine, I can’t find my tux.”

Now, did I panic? No. Did I let the bride know something was amiss? Hell no. She was blissfully ignorant of the entire situation (as it should be).

I went into her room, poured her another glass of champagne, and stepped out into the hall.

“You’ve looked in your hotel room, everywhere?”

“Yes!” he said.

“I think you should go look at the house (her parents lived close by).”

“The house? I don’t think it’s there.”

“If it’s not here, that’s your last option!”

I convinced him to go look.

I walked back into the hotel room to a suspicious bride.

“Where is he?”

“Just getting ready. A little hungover from last night.”

That didn’t seem too crazy to her, and by the time she walked down the aisle, she saw her grinning groom in his tux (yes, it was at the house).

Jeremy & Amanda (2)

As a wedding party member, it is your job to put out the fires. It is not the bride’s job. It is your job to help her pee when her dress is too big. It is your job to hug her when she gets emotional that she’s about to start this new phase of her life!

Also, it is YOUR job to support the decisions she makes. Don’t make her life harder than it is. Don’t like the dress she picked? It’s not your wedding, so make sure to be supportive of her decisions, and let her know she looks stunning in it!

Hate the bridesmaids dress? Don’t ever let her know.

Think the shoes are tacky? She doesn’t!

As one of our recent bridesmaids put it: “Realizing it’s not your wedding, it’s your friend’s, so you need to be supportive of what they need and want, and help make decisions easier, not harder!”

3. Something is going to go wrong

This ties in well with my previous story. But it’s not just at that wedding. Something will happen at every wedding. Seriously. I’ve been in a dozen myself, and have personally been the photographer for more than I can count.

Brian & Kellie (218).jpg

There have been at least 3 weddings where the pastor was late. In one of those cases, he told the bride only a few days before he couldn’t make it at all. In that case, the best man stepped up and got ordained online so he could officiate! Now, that’s commitment!

I once shot a wedding where the best man dropped out the week before.

I’ve been in a wedding where a bridesmaid showed up, didn’t like how her dress fit, and then literally drove back home and never came back for the ceremony.

I once had a groom who was uncertain if he was going to be able to do the mother-son dance because of family drama.

I don’t think I have ever shot a single wedding where the ceremony started right on time.

Things happen. Life happens. It’s all going to be ok!

As a member of the wedding party, try to deal with as much as you can. The bride and groom seriously don’t need anymore stress. And, if it can’t be helped, keep that champagne flowing!

4. After the wedding, your job isn’t quiiite over!

All those gifts need to get packed up in someone’s vehicle! Also, sometimes cleanup is involved at the end of the reception.

Even months after the wedding, the couple may want some help picking out photos for their wedding album (although you need to give the photographer ample time to edit them first)!

Jeremy & Amanda (333)

There’s so much that goes into a wedding day. It’s a whirlwind, but it’s worth it! Know your commitments, be there for the bride and groom, and celebrate these two who are dedicating their lives to each other!

Still in the market for a wedding photographer? Make sure to reach out to us, here, or message us on Facebook! We have home bases in KC and St. Louis, and also travel!

A Day In The Life Of A Photographer – Come To Work With Me!

Hey, everyone! Tatiana here.

I thought would be nice to do a sort of “take your readers to work” sort of blog! Come with me and I will take you on a magical journey into the life of a full time photographer.

christmas 7.jpg

My work station is pretty glamorous, right? I usually edit photos in my living room because it’s the darkest room in the house. Although natural lighting makes for the best photos, I can’t have any glares on my laptop screen while I’m editing! So I shut the blinds and get to workin’.

Depending on the amount of shoots I have to edit, I usually spend 6-8 hours a day editing!

christmas 30.jpg

Factoring in potty breaks for both myself and the fur babies, of course!

christmas 27

And then I also have to factor in the spot stealing, which adds more time to the work day. I’m very fortunate to have such a comfortable work space, but I have to maintain a lot of self discipline to get my deadlines completed on time! So my doggos are usually in another room as they can be rather distracting.

During the slow season, I will use my office hours to network on our social media platforms, set up meetings with potential clients, and research new locations to shoot.

Stephanie 10.jpg I never thought I would be able to visit a haunted winery for work, but that’s all part of my awesome job! This job is also so wonderful because I get to capture monumental and touching memories for my dear friends, as well as the amazing people who book with us!

During the busy season, I usually find myself away from “the office” more often. Here’s an example of a typical week:

Tyler Taelor Engagement 5

I started off June with an elegant engagement shoot at Unity Village with Taylor and Tyler. We usually want to have the teasers and blog completed within 3 days after the shoot so our clients can see the magic as soon as possible!

Mia Neborn 1

During this time, I still had another engagement shoot, a 6 hour babyshower event, and Mia’s newborn shoot (shown above) to complete as well as the teasers for the most current shoot.

This is where that self discipline stuff comes in. My job depends greatly on holding myself accountable to get the photos done on time as well as producing teasers for the current client of the day.

Time management is crucial because weekdays mean the weekend is just around the corner. This particular corner in June had three photoshoots — ON THE SAME DAY!

We started off the day at good ol’ Unity to celebrate Clarissa’s graduation.

Clarissa Grad 2

This gorgeous arced rose bush was truly a lucky wonder because the following week, it was gone! I’m always grateful for the clients who go along with my vision because there’s always a good reason I yell “quick, GET IN THE BUSH!,” which I probably learned from Christine.

After this shoot, I had just enough time to drive to West Bottoms to do another engagement shoot with Sydney and Zane.

Sydney Zane 27

West Bottoms is probably our second most requested location, which means I should probably do a separate blog on it soon!

Anyways, after this shoot I had an hour or so wiggle room before my next shoot — BACK AT UNITY VILLAGE!

Natalie Dance 14

I’m so happy I was able to meet this awesome girl, although it was due to severe weather keeping Christine in St. Louis that day. Natalie’s dance shoot was almost interrupted by that same storm! Thankfully, it started pouring once the time was up.

Wedding Party 35

No matter how busy the business gets, I wouldn’t have it any other way! Life as a photographer lets me discover new places, meet new people, and most importantly it give me room to have time with my family.

I hope you enjoyed this blog! Going through these older photos has me ready for SPRING! <3
